About Nick
Dr. Gothard has a background in condensed matter physics, with emphasis on the effects of composition and microstructure on the electrical, thermal, and optical properties of semiconductors. His interests include isolated defects in bulk and nanomaterials, and he is proficient with a variety of experimental and computational methods. He is active in the American Physical Society and has mentored several student research projects culminating in presentations at regional and national meetings of the APS. Current research projects include GPU-accelerated first principles computational characterization of materials for quantum technologies and field-separated microwave processing of materials for energy conversion.
Dr. Gothard approaches teaching with a goal of promoting impactful mastery of the subject while developing perseverance, confidence, and a desire for lifelong learning and discovery. He maintains engagement with the American Association of Physics Teachers, and his teaching experience includes General Physics I and II, Modern Physics, Experimental Physics, Quantum Mechanics I and II, Research in Physics I and II, Advanced Research in Physics I and II, and Physics Survey. He develops assessments with an eye to producing graduates capable of studying and researching independently, and who can communicate their knowledge orally and in writing.
